Children need dependable, consistent support. By becoming an AOK mentor/tutor, you can become the trusted adult for a child who needs that extra support. Meeting regularly with a struggling student, respecting them, and showing up for them can have a huge impact on their life - and on yours too!

Requirements

Can give 100% of their attention to the students when they are together.
Can pledge an average of one hour a week for one school year to change the life of a student.

Are a safe, trustworthy adult age 21 or older.

Genuinely enjoy children and are interested in the success of all students.
Are flexible, friendly and positive.
Do not need an educational background. AOK volunteers come from all kinds of professions.
Can work one-on-one with a student, as classroom support, or at an after-school program.
Can meet with their mentee in-person during school hours or through Zoom in the afternoon.
Will initially be assigned to an elementary school aged student, but may follow their mentee through middle school.

Interview with References & Background Clearance - Once we have your application form, we'll schedule you for an interview, and check with your two references. Complete a criminal record background check (fingerprinting at FYI Fingerprinting), and a Child Protective Services clearance. Don't worry, AOK is here to help if you have questions.

Training and Matching - Attend a pre-service training class. Shortly after this training is complete, AOK and the school liaisons will work to identify the best fit for the volunteer and the student, matching the student’s needs with your interests. This can be a long process, but please have patience. We place volunteers as late as April.
